Find Joy in God’s Particularity (Matt. 1:18–25)
Before there was a “Christmas spirit” to tap into, there was the unabated bleakness of difficult decisions, confusing circumstances, disappointments, and humble obedience. The essence of Christmas is found in trusting and obeying God, such that we will find joy and delight in his deliverance.
Find Joy in God’s Providence (Matt. 1:2–17)
What is the ideal family Christmas? Jesus’ family tree is surprisingly notorious. Family drama and disappointments are no deterrent to the joy of Christmas. Rather, if you have a humble heritage, then Christmas is especially for you.
Matthew 1:1 - Matthew organizes Jesus’ genealogy according to God’s covenants with Abraham and with David. Matthew highlights the fact that God’s promises endure—even through exile! The joy of Christmas is found in believing that God is faithful to do what he promises.
